Meeting Shamu

We were squishing down the path, still dripping wet from Shipwreck Rapids, when the Sea World trainer stopped us.

She was dressed in shorts over her wetsuit and wearing Tevas. We were on our way to the 5,500-seat Shamu Stadium for the 1:00 p.m. performance. The trainer chatted with us for a few minutes, all smiles and easy questions, while she sized us up. Then, as I hoped, she chose Sydney to be part of the show. We stepped backstage where I signed a waiver/release while Sydney was given the lowdown on what she had to do and say.

She did fantastic! She was my star and was clearly thrilled by the whole experience. She got to feed Shamu, grasp his huge flipper, and have all this projected up on four massive Jumbotrons for the whole packed audience to see. Watching her beam so happily made me feel a little verklempt -- it was cool. A once in a lifetime opportunity.
