Joshua Tree, Day Three
My lord is it windy. You can hear the gusts coming from a ways away, rushing up to you with the subtlety of a freight train. The van rocks from side to side and it isn't because of anything untoward happening inside. I'm up at three as it moans and wails. At first light I run out to the picnic table, grab everything and quickly throw it in the car, and skedaddle. You don't have to be Carnac The Magnificent to foretell that it's going to be a miserable day up here.
It's nearly a brownout through San Gorgonio Pass. The dust storm, whipped by 50 mph gusts, obscures everything more than a quarter mile away. Buy the time I reach Ramona, it's windy, but manageable. Oceanside is downright delightful, with a beautiful swell running. It's sunny and 80 degrees. There's a little smog from a fire out in East County. We're screwed if that one gets rolling. The weather has all the makings of the 2003 Firestorm, and that one was bad news indeed.

A stellar J-Tree sunrise. (But trust me it was so windy that it was hardly enjoyable.)

A lousy photo (shot out the window while driving home from J-Tree) of a good swell day in Oceanside.
