The Drum Circle Is Killing The Environment
Earth Day at Balboa Park and the alternative nation is out in force. We're forced off the path by a Hare Krishna parade and into the Goth Help Us booth of black shades, black T-shirts, and white skin. There are hundreds of exhibitors and most of them are a bit patchouli, a bit out of the mainstream.
Up the path comes the incessant, suck-your-brain-dry beats of a huge drum circle where dozens of crunchy deadheads stomp with ecstatic faces turned toward the sun.
Now, none of this is in any way "wrong." It's fun and entertaining -- harmless. But given the magnitude of the world's environmental problems, and the "devastating outlook" of the latest IPCC report, I was hoping that San Diego's largest Earth Day event would have gone more mainstream.
Individual action is great -- mandatory. But it's not enough. If it appears that only the "fringe" have an interest in the environment, won't decision makers in Washington continue to treat it like a fringe issue?
