Reece's B-day Party

Kid's birthday parties border on drudgery. Not all of them, but most. This makes sense. On the hierarchy of importance, the parents of the invited kids look up from the depths of small-talk purgatory. It's the kids who are supposed to be the ones enjoying themselves.

But this ain't always the case. Sometimes plans are made so everyone has good time.

Reece has turned five and she's having her party today. Mike's bloody finger special home brew is iced up and the barbecue is smoking when we arrive. A tremendously huge bouncy house dominates the backyard, keeping most of the kids occupied while the parents sit in the sun. It's a fun mix of couples -- most we're meeting for the first time. But since they're Discovery Isle parents, we have years of stories in common.

Ten hours later, it's nearing midnight. The Mexican Dominoes game is finally over, the bouncy house was pulled down hours ago, the rental chairs stacked and carted off. We're finally saying our goodbyes and I'm wondering why all kid's birthday parties aren't more like this.

Strangely, there was always a crowd around the Bloody Finger home brew keg.

Daddy, is hoeing hard?

The sacrificial pinata takes a whooping.

Summer and the Bean. Syd was on the verge of tears here because she didn't think she'd have a turn at the pinata. It all worked out fine.
