Memorial Day At St. Malo Beach
Oceanside sucks. At least that's the rap, and it just may be deserved. Sure, there are nice neighborhoods like Fire Mountain, and new subdivisions that are fair to middling. Mostly, though, Oceanside awaits "gentrification."
But there's one Oceanside neighborhood that's been home to the gentry set since the 1920s. The St. Malo is a 79-year-old gated community in South Oceanside protected from the outside world by a lagoon on one side, the sea on the other, and an overall air of secrecy. It has a reputation for being discrete and low-key. Apparently most of the houses are sold to either friends or passed down to family members. The Norman architecture certainly is distinctive.
The parents of friends of ours live in St. Malo and we were invited over for a barbecue today. May Gray finally cleared (at least for a few hours), dolphins were frolicking, a seal came ashore, formations of pelicans paraded overhead, and I made some downright excellent hamburgers. It was all a lot of fun.
