Summer Skies
Oh, but it's an ominous day to be out on the road. Nah, not really. I hardly buy into that superstitious Friday The 13th jazz, and I tell the girls as much as the light begins to fade. It's been a great day for watching the sky. Now, finally, the soft and velvety post-sunset glow has become a more impenetrable black.
This is a good road for the willies. We're on the 395 heading north past Kramer Junction. It's dark and the two-lane road rises and dips so you feel your stomach on the more abrupt descents. The dips are good for hiding oncoming cars, too. With a closing speed of 130 mph, the semi trucks get your attention all right, passing as they do just feet away. Yep, don't look into the headlights and don't think of the willies, the inauspicious date, the remoteness of the road.
By Ridgecrest the road mellows and I can relax, my hands stiff from gripping the wheel so hard. We arrive in Lone Pine near 10:30 p.m. and a million stars are there to greet us.

Carlsbad sky.

Victorville sky.
